Decorating your home is exciting, but it can also be a little overwhelming and daunting. Orange County designer Wendy Blackband of Blackband Design is giving us a series of tips to help make the process manageable, fun and successful, allowing you to create a home you love to live in.
Tip #2 – Decide how you are using the room, and what emotion you want it to convey.
Now that you have “cleaned house,” it’s time to really define how you want to use the space. In practical terms, what is your vision for how this room will function every day in the life of your family? What is its best use? Is there a focal point, such as a fireplace, TV or dining table? This will dictate some of the necessary furnishings, such as comfortable chairs, sofas or a dining table. Should this room be an everyday space, or be reserved for special occasions? As you envision life in this room, think about the emotion and tone that you want to communicate. Is it a family room that you want everyone to feel comfortable, nurtured and “at home” in? Is it a room with an inviting, casually elegant feel, or a more formal space? This is an essential decision, which leads directly to the next step of envisioning the actual design and style of the room. That’s where the fun really begins!
