Discovering Dover Shores

By Gina Dostler

Though the past several weeks were hotter than normal, today was a celebration of a bright blue sky and a happy sun beaming down a perfect 80-degree summer day with Newport’s famous cooling breeze leading the way.

The sun-filled waters of the Upper Newport Bay, where the San Diego Creek meets the Pacific leaves a beautiful scene to behold. Standing high above, in Galaxy Park, one can see the Back Bay’s summer panoramic view of bright green islands where tall reeds and grasses shoot up from the water and birds in graceful flight glide through the air looking for the perfect spot to land.

Many residents of Newport find the Dover Shores area the perfect spot to land and make their home by the bay. Jennifer Norminton, a real estate professional with Surterre Properties, is a resident of Dover Shores and loves the community atmosphere.

Having worked for 10 years in the real estate business, her experience in marketing and technology have been valuable in marketing homes, along with her real estate partner Vel Turney, within this area. I wanted to spotlight the neighborhood, and Jennifer, in her warm and friendly way, gave me a few more reasons to really like this part of Newport.

Q:  When was Dover Shores built?

A:  Because the neighborhood was built in the 1950s and 1960’s, there is a wide variety of prices and styles. In the Dover Shores many homes are on the waterfront or have water views. These are the higher priced properties. There are two private beaches for the residents to enjoy to have a party, picnic or enjoy “Movie Night” on the beach every Tuesday evening during the summer. Neighbors take turns bringing dinner for everyone to enjoy.

Q:  What makes living in Dover Shores so appealing?

A:  Other amenities in the Dover Shores communities are the Newport Beach Aquatic Center, where you can rent kayaks, Mariners Park, the Newport Beach Library, and the experience of 17th street. On 17th street you will find restaurants, bakeries, various shops, hair salons, & just about anything you are looking for. Dover Shores communities are part of the popular Mariners Elementary School in the Newport – Mesa School District.

Q:  The location is perfect too.

A:  Well, the close proximity to the airport, freeways, the Back Bay, and the beach makes it a central location for a lot of different activities. Right down the street you find PCH which gives you access to Corona del Mar, Balboa, Lido Island and all the coastal cities.

Q:  It’s a family oriented neighborhood.

A:  Absolutely. During the week in the morning’s Mariner’s street is filled with parents and kids heading off to Mariner’s Elementary and there is such a quaintness watching the little kids walking on the sidewalk while mom or dad pushes the stroller with the family dog walking along side.

Q. You have quite a bit of knowledge and experience in this area.

A. In the real estate business knowledge and experience makes for the best agent. Not only am I a real estate specialist in Dover Shores, I am a resident here. My firsthand knowledge of the area and unique perspective of the local market allows us the best guidance for anyone seeking to purchase or sell a home in this community.

Q. So you were born here?

A. I was born at Hoag Hospital along with my six siblings. Growing up in Newport Beach my entire life let me see the incredible changes and growth this locale has spawned. And I choose to continue living here raising my family. In the real estate business I see many communities and neighborhoods and there is still no other place I would rather live than in this beautiful area!

Q:  You also are helping to bring more community with a neighborhood blog site.

A:  Yes, it’s a place where Dover Shore area residents can blog and network on our interactive website (www.homesindovershores.com) to create a greater sense of community and keep the neighborhood talking with each other. We also offer a market analysis of their home which is a nice tool for them and earns them a certificate for one of several vendor services we have collaborated to introduce them to their retail neighbors. So many changes and new vendors popping up locally we thought it a good way to get the two together while giving residents vital information on their home and neighborhood happenings. Last year we coordinated a Dover Shores area garage sale that was quite successful and fun.
