Decorating your home is exciting, but it can also be a little overwhelming and daunting. So why not start one room at a time? Over the next few weeks, we’ll bring you a series of hints, tips and ideas from Orange County designer Wendy Blackband of Blackband Design. Wendy’s recommendations will help make the process manageable, fun and successful, allowing you to create a home you love to live in.

Tip #1: Choose a room and then clean house!

Select one room that is important for you and your family. Typically, this is a room where you spend quality time, such as a family room or a master retreat. Then commit to “cleaning house” in that room. Examine every piece, evaluate why it’s there, and then keep only what you love. This is the time to free yourself from things that you’ve been trying to force fit in that room. Get rid of items that you have been justifying because they are still functional, or because they were expensive, or because you feel guilty about sentimental attachments. Sell them on eBay or Craigslist, or give them to a worthy charity. You’ll be left with a cleaner palette, both physically and emotionally, to begin creating a room that you and your family truly love.
